Southwest Airlines increases checked baggage fees

Southwest Airlines has just announced new fees for checked bags. Starting January 27, 2026, the airline will charge more than USD 35 for the first bag and more than USD 45 for the second bag (current rates).

However, the American airline has announced that the following categories remain exempt from baggage fees:

  • Business Select®
  • Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred
  • Rapid Rewards A-List Members
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards Credit Cardholders

The new rule is in addition to the seat assignment policy, announced on the same date by the American low-cost airline, which gives passengers the option to choose their seat by paying a fee. The service is currently free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

This policy change applies to both domestic and international flights.

Previously, Southwest offered a baggage allowance that included checking one to two bags at no charge, but that policy ended on May 28.
