An aviation enthusiast since childhood, I follow the evolution of air transport worldwide with great interest. Through Uspassengers.com, I focus on analyzing the latest news from American airlines and all carriers operating to and from the United States: new routes, fleet renewals, inter-company agreements, airport developments, and more.
Japanese travelers planning a trip with United can now manage their flights in their own language. The American carrier has launched a Japanese-language version of its mobile app, which also includes the option to make payments in Japanese yen. It is available for download now via the Apple App Store and Google Play.
A first for a U.S. airline
By offering an interface fully translated into Japanese, United has become the first U.S. airline to reach this milestone. Previously, Japanese passengers had to navigate an app available only in Western languages, which made routine tasks—such as checking in, viewing ticket details, or modifying a reservation—more difficult.
Support for the Japanese yen
Beyond the translation, the app now supports the Japanese currency, allowing customers to make payments directly in yen.
United Airlines’ strong presence in Japan
United currently serves five Japanese airports across four cities.
For the 2026–2027 winter season, the airline plans to operate up to 13 daily flights between the continental United States and Japan, serving Tokyo-Haneda (HND), Tokyo-Narita (NRT), Osaka-Kansai (KIX), and Sapporo (CTS). Nagoya (NGO) is also included, with service provided from hubs in the continental U.S. and Guam.
Two new winter routes in Japan
Chicago–Tokyo Narita: A daily round-trip flight, launched on October 24, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
San Francisco–Sapporo: Three round-trip flights per week, offered exclusively during the winter season from December 11 through March. This marks the first non-stop service between the continental United States and Sapporo, operated by a Boeing 787-9.
