Everything you need to know about canceling your American Airlines flight

Canceling an American Airlines ticket can result in a refund, a credit, or a total loss, depending on three factors: who is canceling, when the cancellation occurs, and the fare type purchased. Rules have changed recently, particularly regarding the 24-hour policy.

The fare type determines the outcome. Non-refundable tickets do not result in a cash refund; cancellation generally yields a travel credit rather than a monetary reimbursement. Options are even more limited for Basic Economy tickets. After the initial 24-hour window, AAdvantage members may receive a “Trip Credit” minus specific Basic Economy fees, provided their AAdvantage number was included in the reservation prior to cancellation. If these fees exceed the ticket price, no credit is issued. While a $99 fee is frequently cited, please treat this figure as an estimate and confirm the exact amount when canceling.

Credits have an expiration date. A Trip Credit is valid for 12 months for AAdvantage members and 6 months for non-members from the date of issuance; the holder may use it to book travel for another person. American does not extend or reinstate expired credits. Make a note of the expiration date upon issuance.

What are American Airlines cancellation fees?

Cancellation fees are charged by the airline if you cancel your flight because you are unable or unwilling to travel on the scheduled dates. Non-refundable airline tickets are, as their name suggests, non-refundable; in other words, they no longer have any value if they are not used in accordance with the conditions of purchase.

Fees apply to passengers who canceled their flight – booked with the Basic Economy fare – voluntarily, the amount of which varies depending on the route booked:

– Domestic flight (between two cities in the United States): $99

– Flight to or from Hawaii or Alaska: $129

– Flight from the United States to Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Guyana, Peru, Caribbean (except Dominican Republic): $129

– Flight from the United States to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and all countries in Europe and the Middle East: $199

Please note that these fees apply to AAdvantage member passengers. So, if you are not a member of this loyalty program, the fees charged after canceling your American Airlines flight may be higher.

Charges may also increase if you do not cancel your reservation before flight departure.

About the 24-hour rule

U.S. regulations require U.S. based airlines – including American Airlines – to provide minimum consumer protections: either a free 24-hour hold or penalty-free cancellation within 24 hours for any reservation made at least one week prior to departure.

Note that American Airlines applies this rule only to tickets purchased for flights departing at least one week later. For reservations made less than seven days before departure, you would receive only a credit, subject to Basic Economy fees if applicable.

How to cancel an American Airlines flight

Whether cancelling online or via the app, the process is the same on aa.com and in the app:

1. Locate your trip using your confirmation code, or log in to your AAdvantage account.

2. Click “Cancel trip” in the menu, then confirm.

3. Check your inbox: a cancellation confirmation email will be sent to you.

If you are not an AAdvantage member, you will need the confirmation code or the 13-digit ticket number starting with 001. You can find these in your booking email, cancellation email, or credit card statement.

Other ways to cancel your AA reservation

By phone, through American’s reservations department. This is useful if your situation falls outside the standard online process (e.g., group tickets, complex itineraries).

Through the agency or third-party site if you booked with them. You must submit your refund request to them, not to American.

At the airport, at the ticket counter. This works, but you lose the benefit of the Trip Credit described above.

Flight cancelled by American Airlines

When the airline initiates the cancellation, the situation shifts from standard fare terms to regulatory requirements.

Cash refunds. American Airlines is required to automatically refund the original form of payment in the event of a cancellation or significant change, provided you do not accept re-routing or a voucher. Timeframes are regulated: 7 business days for credit card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.

Accepting an offer means forfeiting the refund. American specifies that passengers who accept re-routing, or who travel on a delayed or rescheduled flight, are not entitled to a refund. Also, if offered a voucher, clearly state that you want a cash refund and decline the credit.

The exact threshold is a gray area. Summaries of the federal rule cite delays exceeding 3 hours for domestic flights and 6 hours for international flights, as well as changes to airports, connections, or cabin class. However, American’s help page specifies 3 hours or more for domestic flights and 4 hours or more for international flights. If you are on the borderline, rely on American’s wording and keep the change notification.

Hotel and meals. Eligibility for this depends on the cause of the cancellation. When the disruption is within American’s control and you have paid out-of-pocket for hotel, transport, or meals, you can submit a reimbursement claim, which will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. In the case of weather-related issues, American will re-route you for free, but hotel and meal costs remain your responsibility. Therefore, keep all your receipts.

No fixed compensation in the United States. No rule requires airlines to pay financial compensation for delayed or cancelled domestic flights. The situation in Europe is different: Regulation EC 261 provides for compensation of €250, €400, or €600 depending on the distance, but it generally applies to flights departing from a European Union airport and excludes “extraordinary circumstances” such as adverse weather.

If the refund is delayed, submit a written request using the refund form on aa.com, attaching your booking reference, screenshots, and records of any correspondence.

Keep track of the days. Note the date of the triggering event (cancellation or refusal of re-routing) and apply the 7-business-day or 20-calendar-day timeframe.
