American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program is one of the oldest and most generous in the airline industry. Contrary to popular belief, you no longer need to fly to accumulate miles: credit cards, online purchases, hotels, restaurants, and car rentals now allow you to build your balance much faster than by flying alone.

Earning miles while flying
The Principle: Miles are calculated based on the amount spent, not the distance traveled.
Since American Airlines stopped calculating miles based on distance flown, the majority of earnings are now based on money spent rather than kilometers traveled. On flights operated by AA, the number of miles earned depends on both the base fare (excluding taxes) and the traveler’s Elite status level: the higher the status, the higher the mileage multiplier. On flights operated by oneworld alliance partner airlines, the calculation differs and is based on a percentage of the flight distance, adjusted according to the fare class.

It is no longer possible to earn miles with the Basic Economy fare
For a long time, American Airlines’ Basic Economy was considered one of the least punitive options on the U.S. market. You paid less and accepted a few restrictions, but you could still earn miles for your AAdvantage account. That era is over: the airline has stripped away the key benefits that made this fare attractive to loyal travelers.
Mile accrual drops to zero
Going forward, there are no AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points—the latter being used to achieve elite status.
Baggage and upgrades
Status-related benefits are also affected. Basic Economy fares are excluded from upgrades, and checked bags incur an additional $5 fee. Elite members, who could previously hope for an upgrade, must now choose a higher fare class to enjoy that perk.
What remains unchanged
Not everything has disappeared. American still allows a personal item and a carry-on bag at no extra cost, along with complimentary snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and in-flight entertainment. Long-standing rules also remain in place: no ticket changes, paid refunds only, and boarding in the final groups.
Many other ways to earn AAdvantage miles
Besides flights, a significant portion of the miles accumulated by members come from co-branded payment cards, online shopping portals, and partnerships with everyday retailers (hotels, car rentals, restaurants, streaming services, etc.).

Practical advice to progress faster:
– Concentrate everyday spending on a co-branded AAdvantage card to transform everyday purchases into miles and Loyalty Points.
– Systematically go through the eShopping portal before making any online purchase from a partner brand.
– Book hotels and rental cars via official AAdvantage platforms.
– Monitor temporary bonus offers (up to +25% Loyalty Points) offered on spending via program partners.
– Keep in mind that crossing a status level during the qualification year applies immediately, with retroactive effect on flights already carried out since March 1st.
