Delta Airlines Refund and Cancellation Policy

Delta Airlines has implemented a moderate cancellation policy that allows passengers whose plans have changed at the last minute to cancel their reservation. However, whether or not they receive a refund depends on the fare conditions of their tickets and their Elite status in the Skymiles loyalty program.

Some travelers have more flexibility than others regarding refunds, depending on the fare they purchased:

Refundable Delta Airlines fares:

– Delta Main Extra

– Delta Comfort Extra

– Delta Premium Select

– Delta One

Non-refundable Delta Airlines fares:

– Delta Main Basic

– Delta Main Classic

– Delta Comfort Classic

– Delta Premium Select Classic

– Delta First Classic

– Delta One Classic.

How to cancel a flight with Delta Airlines?

You can cancel your Delta Airlines reservation from their website or the FlyDelta mobile app by going to “My Trips“.

Once logged into your account, you will see the confirmed reservation with Delta. Click on “Need to cancel?”, then on “Flight cancellation” and follow the on-screen instructions until your reservation is canceled.

If your fare is eligible for a refund and you paid by credit card, the refund will be credited to your credit card within 7 business days.

If you paid for your flight in cash or by check, please allow up to 30 days for the refund to be credited to your bank account.

Delta Airlines policy for flights canceled for medical reasons

Delta Airlines will refund your entire airfare, regardless of the fare conditions of your reservation, if you are forced to cancel your trip due to a serious or contagious illness:

– Serious bodily injury, serious or contagious illness,

– Death of a close family member.

A $100 fee (covering the processing of the medical file submitted by the passenger) will be deducted from the refund amount (which will be issued as a travel credit valid for 60 months).

To request a refund for your flight after canceling your booking for medical reasons, you must include this form with your request. This form serves as a medical certificate. The form contains a section to be completed by your attending physician, describing your illness and confirming your inability to take the flight on the scheduled date, along with their signature and personal details.

Delta Award flight cancellation policy

Tickets booked with miles on Delta Airlines are also subject to a specific cancellation policy.

Delta does not charge cancellation fees for award tickets booked for travel between the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, nor for any flights scheduled to depart from the United States and Canada.

However, a $150 fee applies for flight cancellations originating from outside the United States (primarily the United States and Canada).

Delta Airlines also reserves the right to charge a fee of 9,900 miles for flight cancellations within the United States and 19,900 miles for international flight cancellations (excluding Canada).

Canceling a non-refundable ticket within the 24-hour booking window

There is a widely accepted international rule or standard that gives passengers the right to cancel their reservation free of charge: This is the 24-hour rule, which allows cancellation within the first 24 hours after purchasing the flight and provides a full refund, regardless of the fare or whether the ticket includes a refund option.

Purchase cancellation insurance from Delta Airlines

If the passenger then purchases a cheaper fare without the Flex option, they must assume responsibility. In this case, the best option is to be proactive and take out travel cancellation insurance, which is always recommended when the trip is booked well in advance or if the traveler anticipates that circumstances may change, thus affecting their travel plans.

In partnership with Allianz Travel Insurance (purchase your insurance online), a key player in the travel assistance and insurance sector, Delta Airlines offers its customers a plan that typically covers:

– Trip cancellation

– Medical assistance and repatriation (for trips abroad) with coverage up to $50,000.

Flight cancelled by Delta Airlines

This completely changes the situation. The cancellation is entirely beyond your control, so if no alternative transportation is available, the airline owes you a full refund plus compensation in certain circumstances.

How to request a refund from Delta Airlines for a flight cancellation?

In the event of cancellation of a flight booked with one of these fares, the passenger can still receive their refund from Delta, but not in cash: Instead, they receive a travel credit of an equivalent amount, after deduction of cancellation fees (ranging from USD 99 to USD 400 depending on the route).
