An aviation enthusiast since childhood, I follow the evolution of air transport worldwide with great interest. Through Uspassengers.com, I focus on analyzing the latest news from American airlines and all carriers operating to and from the United States: new routes, fleet renewals, inter-company agreements, airport developments, and more.
US ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is set to enter the Colombian market, marking its first service to South America.
Announcing the news on September 10 at an event held at Orlando International Airport (MCO), the low-cost airline revealed plans for three new routes to:
– Bogotá El Dorado Airport
– Medellín José María Córdova Airport
– Cartagena Rafael Núñez Airport.
Frontier Airlines stated that flights to these three Colombian destinations will be operated using A320 aircraft equipped with the new “First Class” seats recently introduced to the airline’s fleet.
Service to Medellín (a daily route) will launch first on December 10, followed shortly by the Bogotá route (launching December 14, also daily), and then a weekly service to Cartagena five days later.
Frontier will compete with Avianca and LATAM, which already operate flights between Orlando and the Colombian capital, but will be the only airline offering direct service between Orlando and Cartagena for the time being.
However, all these routes remain subject to approval by Colombian civil aviation authorities, a requirement the airline must meet before flights actually begin.
Flights are already available for booking
Tickets are currently on sale via Frontier’s website and app. The airline is offering promotional introductory fares starting at $99 one-way, though it notes that these low fares are available in limited quantities and may sell out quickly for the most popular travel dates.
As is standard practice for this ultra-low-cost carrier, the base fare does not include seat selection, checked baggage, or even carry-on luggage. Options billed separately at the time of booking, or at an even higher price directly at the airport.
