An aviation enthusiast since childhood, I follow the evolution of air transport worldwide with great interest. Through Uspassengers.com, I focus on analyzing the latest news from American airlines and all carriers operating to and from the United States: new routes, fleet renewals, inter-company agreements, airport developments, and more.
American Airlines has made two changes to the benefits offered to Elite members of its AAdvantage loyalty program when traveling on a Basic Economy ticket. This change has not been well received by the members concerned, who were accustomed to combining the lowest fare with the privileges associated with their status.
Elimination of seat selection and upgrades for Elite members

As of May 18, 2026, AAdvantage members with Elite status (Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum) will lose the following benefits when booking a Basic Economy ticket:
– Free seat selection before check-in (standard, preferred, or Main Cabin Extra seat). The seat is now assigned at check-in or at the gate, just like for a passenger without status.
If the passenger still wishes to choose their seat in advance, they must pay a fee of approximately $15 to $75 per segment, depending on the route.
– Eligibility for upgrades on domestic flights to Business and First Class.
– Eligibility for system-wide upgrade certificates (SWU), including for Executive Platinum members and on long-haul flights. This is confirmed by the official AAdvantage program page: these certificates are no longer valid on Basic Economy tickets purchased from May 18, 2026.
These restrictions also apply to elite status holders of oneworld alliance partner airlines (British Airways, Qantas, Japan Airlines, etc.).
Elimination of mileage accrual
This decision was made nineteen months ago. On December 17, 2025, American Airlines announced in a press release that any Basic Economy ticket purchased will no longer accrue AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points, regardless of the passenger’s status.
Other related changes
Since May 18, checked baggage in Basic Economy on American Airlines flights costs $5 more than in standard Economy ($50 prepaid online / $55 at the check-in counter for the first bag, compared to $45 / $50 in standard Economy).
In addition, AAdvantage members without status or a co-branded credit card will move from boarding group 6 to group 7 on Basic Economy tickets.
Perks maintained with American Airlines:
On the bright side, American Airlines has chosen to preserve certain benefits that other carriers have simply eliminated for their own elite members traveling in Basic Economy. These include:
– The free baggage allowance associated with Elite status, which remains applicable in Basic Economy.
– Priority boarding associated with status is maintained.
– Boarding benefits associated with AAdvantage co-branded credit cards are maintained.
– Free Wi-Fi on board remains available to all AAdvantage members, including those in Basic Economy.
This is far from insignificant, especially considering that United and Delta apply even stricter restrictions to their own Basic Economy tickets. This means that American Airlines, despite these cuts, retains a considerable competitive advantage on at least these two concrete points compared to its main American competitors.
Some points to note:
The Loyalty Point thresholds required to obtain or maintain status remain unchanged for 2026 (Gold: 40000; Platinum: 75000; Platinum Pro: 125000; Executive Platinum: 200000).
These rules apply to Basic Economy tickets purchased from the dates mentioned. As American Airlines’ fare policies have changed several times this year, it is recommended to check the updated conditions on aa.com before booking.
