Delta Airlines: Boeing 767-400 engine catches fire after takeoff

A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-400 had to make an emergency landing after one of its engines caught fire during takeoff.

The aircraft, operating from Los Angeles International Airport, suffered an engine failure during takeoff yesterday, Friday, July 18, 2025. Delta Airlines Flight 446, with more than 250 passengers and 18 crew members on board, was departing Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) for Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, Atlanta (ATL), USA, when the incident occurred.

An airline spokesperson told the BBC, “The engine located on the left side of the aircraft emitted a loud bang and trailed flames. The crew continued the takeoff, climbed to a safe altitude, and returned to the departure airport for a safe landing.” According to the Business Standard media outlet, investigators are currently analyzing data from the flight data recorder to determine the precise cause of the crash.

This incident comes just days after the crash of the Air India Boeing 787, which killed 260 passengers and crew.
