American Airlines : Free upgrades for AAdvantage Elite members capped at premium economy

American Airlines has just changed a popular rule of its AAdvantage loyalty program. Previously, passengers with elite status traveling in economy class could, subject to availability, receive a free upgrade directly to business class. However, this option has now been eliminated on nine specific routes, all operated with a three-cabin configuration (economy, premium economy, and business).

Now, the free upgrade will only move passengers up one level: from economy to premium economy. To reach business class without paying for a dedicated ticket, passengers must already be seated in premium economy at departure.

The affected routes include high-demand transcontinental services such as New York-JFK and Boston to Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as services to Hawaii from Dallas, Phoenix, and Chicago.

American Airlines clarifies that business class upgrades already confirmed before this date will remain valid, provided there are no changes to the itinerary. Pending requests will be automatically reclassified to premium economy within a few days of the change taking effect.

Another point to note: on some American Airlines aircraft, the premium economy cabin includes middle seats, which upgraded passengers may be assigned. This difference significantly alters the experience compared to a business class seat.

The airline emphasizes that “systemwide” upgrades (using specific certificates) are not affected and will continue to allow direct access to the next higher class.
