Delta Air Lines fare categories: Complete Guide

When booking a flight with Delta Air Lines, the displayed price depends on more than just the chosen cabin. The Atlanta-based airline has established a two-tiered system: first, you choose your onboard space, then a fare option that determines flexibility and benefits. Here is how to navigate the options.

Choosing your Delta cabin

Delta offers five cabin classes, ranging from the most affordable to the most upscale.

Delta Main

This is the standard economy cabin. It replaces the former “Main Cabin” designation and encompasses the vast majority of seats on the aircraft.

Delta Comfort

This follows the concept of the former “Comfort+”: it is still economy class, but includes:

– Extra legroom
– Enhanced onboard service
– Priority boarding (Sky Priority).

Delta Premium Select

This corresponds to premium economy class and is primarily offered on long-haul flights, featuring:

– Wider seats with greater recline
– More attentive service than in the previous cabin classes.

Delta First

– This designates first class on North American domestic flights
– It was simply called “First Class” prior to the name change.

Delta One

This is the international business class, featuring:

– Seats that convert into beds
– Access to dedicated lounges
– Gourmet dining service.

Choosing your Delta fare option based on the cabin

Within each cabin, travelers select one of three tiers: Basic, Classic, or Extra. The tier determines what the ticket allows regarding the time before and during the journey. Delta Basic:

This is the most economical option, designed for travelers who have fixed plans and do not require flexibility. In Delta Air Lines’ economy class, this replaces the old “Basic Economy” and is now branded as “Main Basic”:

– Seat assignment occurs only at check-in
– Boarding takes place last (Zone 8)
– Booking changes are very limited
– Loyalty program rewards are reduced
– Sky Club lounge access is not included, even for SkyMiles members.

Delta Basic

It is available across all cabin classes:

Delta First Basic, available on select domestic routes and flights to Latin America

Premium Select Basic, available for booking now for flights starting in September, on select domestic and long-haul routes

Basic Business, the name given to the entry-level Delta One tier (the airline avoided the name “Delta One Basic”), following the same rollout schedule.

Delta Classic

This corresponds to what many travelers expect from a standard Delta Air Lines ticket:

– Seat selection at the time of booking
– Fee-free cancellation
– Option to fly standby on an earlier flight the same day.

Delta Extra

This option replaces the former refundable ticket. It allows you to:

– Cancel and receive a full refund
– Board earlier
– Benefit from free confirmed same-day flight changes
– Earn more miles.

For Medallion members, an Extra ticket also ranks higher than a Classic ticket regarding service priorities.
