American Airlines: Philadelphia-Phoenix flight diverted due to smoke detected in cabin

American Airlines diverted a flight from Philadelphia to Phoenix at Washington Dulles Airport Saturday morning after flight attendants noticed that one of the carry-on bags was emitting smoke.

According to ABC News, which shared a video filmed by a passenger named Adirana Novello, “Smoke was coming from a suitcase and there was a suspicious odor. Flight attendants quickly intervened to dissipate the smoke and were able to bring the situation under control.”

The plane landed around 11:30 a.m. with 160 passengers and six members of staff on board, who were met by emergency personnel upon disembarking at Washington, D.C. Airport.

In a statement, American Airlines said: “Our flight attendants were able to control the situation, and the aircraft landed safely.”

American Airlines did not disclose the type of aircraft responsible for the incident. An FAA investigation is currently underway.

Another American Airlines flight forced to land elsewhere

An American Airlines flight was diverted earlier this month when an AA Boeing 787-8 aircraft deployed on flight AA221, departing Amsterdam-Schiphol for Dallas-Fort Worth, was forced to change direction and land at New York City Airport due to a technical problem with the aircraft.
