American Airlines has announced its intention to sign a codeshare agreement with Canadian airline Porter Airlines.
The two airlines have already signed this agreement and are simply awaiting approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin code-sharing on their main routes between the United States and Canada.
The agreement, which is expected to come into effect soon, will see American Airlines and Porter Airlines codeshare on their direct services connecting major cities in both countries, such as Halifax, Montreal, Toronto Pearson, Ottawa in Canada and Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fort Lauderdale in the United States.
This codeshare does not apply to flights to or from Boston, Chicago Midway, Newark and Washington Dulles, as both partners have stated.
Airline agreements facilitate the movement of customers who travel with more than one airline to reach their destinations, while airlines save on operating costs.
American Airlines strengthens its presence in eastern Canada
This agreement allows American Airlines (a member of Oneworld) to support its expansion strategy in such an important market, covering the most popular destinations in the vast North American country, such as Toronto and Ottawa.
Porter Airlines also benefits from this agreement
The new partnership announced by the two North American operators is also seen as excellent news for Porter Airlines passengers, who will have easier access to key destinations in the United States, such as Dallas/Fort Worth, Philadelphia, and Miami.
As a reminder, Porter Airlines serves sixteen destinations in the United States, but unlike its future partner AA, it is not part of any airline alliance.
