In US airports, passengers no longer need to remove their shoes when going through security checkpoints.
Until recently, passengers traveling from US airports were required to remove their shoes or place them through a metal and explosive detector. This rule was actually introduced in 2001 after a failed attack at Miami Airport, when a passenger boarding a flight from Paris arriving at the US airport was caught by security officers hiding explosives under his shoes.
Kristi Noem, the US Secretary of Homeland Security, announced this decision, stating that it should ease the travel process for travelers through security checkpoints without compromising airport security.
The removal of this rule should improve the experience of passengers traveling to or transiting through US airports. On the other hand, the other rules of the security protocol consist of removing their belts, taking their electronic devices out of their pockets and luggage and presenting their identity card.
